ok as some of you know i am in the process of restoring a 1990 tzr.. nearly everything is done!!

its painted (except the fairing, no its not the best job either) new bolt kits (for when fairing done), ton's of new bits here and there

anyway.. i've been for a ride and she feels ok so thought right whats left before the mot..

front side light and rear lights..

i have took out the front side light, yep its buggered.. took out the rear lights and they are fine.. tested them and they are definately fine.

so now im p**sed.. i thought it was a case of replacing bulbs and off to mot.. so i booked it!!!!

i was just waiting for the front brake light switch which came today and thought i was done.

so (although this is quite a jumbled post) is there some thing that i need to pay particular attention to, will the rear lights fail if the side light fails (i doubt that) where do i start on this new job!!!

ps - the battery is buggered but i tried connecting a brand new battery off a cg125 just for test purpurses and still no life!

where is the fuse for the rear lights? wouldnt all lights not work if the fuse had gone and dip and main beam work fine.

its got a brand new ignition switch.. because at some point the earth had been cut and removed leaving it able to be started just by flicking the cut off to on and kicking it over.

the light switch obviously works as it turns on the front lights no problem!

anybody??

no back lights,

front lights work,
indicators work,
brake lights work...

all working fine with just engine running and crap battery!

so why dont my back lights (2bulbs) work...please help!

side light bulb is buggered but thats completely irrelevant ...or is it???!!!

ME TO THE RESCUE!!!

lol this happened to me, follow my instructions lol just check the following:

DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY FIRST

look at your ignition barrel. there will be a wire that is not connected to it.

take it apart and solder it back inside.

connect it all together (battery etc)

and try it. then it should work

ONCE MORE!!!

also my side light was sh*t!!! it would only work if i pinched the connection with my fingers aroundf the bulb connector. so i cleaned it out, and put a new bulb in, i also cleaned out ALL the connectors inside the headlight!

have you tried replacing the earths?
take the earth wire that comes from the bulbs, cut it, and bolt it straight to the chassis,as close to the bulbs as possible,the grab rail mounts are a good place

I looked closely at the brand new ignition barrel and obviously that is fine.. worked down to the block connector and then looked at side plugged into the new ignition. This was taped up and nice and neat so was going to leave it then thought... better remove all that tape.

All the wires looked nice and tight but on tugging a little and messing about the red wire fell out.. with this the front light died.. i pushed it back in and the front light came on then I noticed so was the back one...


So final question... if that red wire was only half pushed in/barely touching would the font light come on and not the back?? or is it more likely that prodding around the front end wiring I have inadvertantly solved the problem.

Anyway its working now.. so thats a good thing.

it aint so big these days kid,its a little more modest at about 2-3 inches,but this picture reminded me how f**king good it was, and has made me decide to grow it againin that picture, my hair took me to about 7 foot 5, so it was about 14 inches tall

haha, sorry mate,take it as a compliment.you read younger.dont know why i used that term, its not in my usual vocab.mind you, i am suffering a little with brain fog today,cos lastnight was HEAVY

Hey all yesterday I was real p**sed with the bike so chucked it on ebay..I know it wont sell for that but what I was trying to do was provoke a higher offer (did that with my zxr400 and made ?300 more than I paid for it)

Anyway have a look for it...I dunno how to make a clicky!

I am now thinking of pulling it again.. just so I can really get it finished BEFORE I make a final choice on selling or not.. even though on the listing that IS the reason I have to sell... (maybe I will buy a little shed just for the TZR and keep it anyway!)

PS I am way to tight to pay listing fees so dont look under motorcycles and scooters.

Electrical issues... What fun!!!

In terms of general electrics, my best advice to anyone and everyone is:

1) steal an A3 photocopier and enlarge your wiring diagram to A3 -- BLOODY USEFUL!!!!! (mine was a godsend).

2) learn how to read wiring diagrams (they're really easy).

3) get yourself a decent multimeter with a kick-ass continuity tester built in -- AGAIN... HIGHLY USEFUL!!!

4) apply plenty of logic to the situation - electrics are 100% logical. They will either work or not work, you don't get a 'somewhere in between' type scenario. current will either flow or not flow (ignoring internal resistance and so on and so forth, which, for the purposes of checking everything is connected properly, is completely fine to ignore).

5) if all of that fails, get your bike down to Reading, giving me a holler beforehand, and i'll have a look at it for you.
